Module 1 - Drawing and Painting Animals

Module 1: Learn how to draw animals accurately by using anatomic drawing techniques and make a painting of an animal of your choice.

Students will learn how to accurately observe, draw and paint animals with the help of the instructor. We focus on traditional Fine Art skills. The basics, as they apply to the theme, are covered as part of the module: use of line, texture, composition, color, proportion, perspective, contrast as well as some more advanced ways of accurately reflecting animals in Fine Art making.

This class caters to all skill levels. Students will also be given the opportunity to create a final painting of an animal of their choice. Acrylics and a variety of drawing media like graphite pencils, pastels and charcoal may be explored. Students will be contacted via e-mail if necessary with further instructions for what to expect for their first class.

Drawing animals is a wonderful way to make ourselves look more carefully at nature and to develop the skills we need to draw or paint animals in any way we would like to. At the Avianne Academy of Arts, we want to help you to learn how to accurately draw animals to be able to incorporate them into your own nature related art making. If you understand things like animal anatomy better, you will be better at drawing what you see or imagine. In our art classes , we typically use techniques like step-by-step demonstrations and details about drawing animals to teach you how to draw them confidently.

Traditional Fine Art drawing skills is foundational in all art making, even animation, design and 3D art and therefore we always incorporate drawing fundamentals in our Fine Art art instruction. But we do not stop there: we will also teach you how to paint animals using acrylics. For oil painting lessons, you will need to sign up for a different type of class that has an oil painting focus. Please let us know if you are interested in learning oil painting also.

We cannot possibly teach you how to draw all the animal species known to humankind in our limited time with you, but we can teach you enough, using some primary animals as examples, so that you can apply what you learn to a variety of animals.

Animals that are good practice for drawing and painting are horses, dogs, cats, birds, lizards and deer – they cover most of the anatomical knowledge and creative techniques you will need to know to draw animals well. Some marine animals like whales and jellyfish also make for interesting subject matter.

We do have a course coming up later in the year in, Module 5, with classes that cover drawing ocean scenes and creatures. Be sure to look out for that. Also look out for our Module 4: drawing and painting humans.

Practice makes perfect. Remember that it takes a lot of time and practice to become truly great at drawing or painting animals. If you want to be great at drawing and painting animals, you will need to be willing to be teachable and have patience with yourself. The most important thing you can do to improve your general animal drawing and sketching is to start drawing more frequently. Keeping you sketching supplies handy also helps.

All our instructors are very experienced artists who are experts at the subject matter they teach you. Although there are many online resources for learning how to draw and paint animals, nothing beats having an actual instructor, in real time, who can demonstrate and assist you in learning. This will greatly accelerate your learning curve.
